For different computer systems there are different operating systems. One of the most prevalent is the Microsoft series of operating systems, the newest of which is Windows 7. The Microsoft platform gained a large market shareholding after its initial injection as a personal computer operating system in the early inception of the personal computer. The rise of the Microsoft Corporation is tied directly to its founder Bill Gates and his work in college to begin the company. Despite the popularity the Microsoft form of operating system is not without its longstanding critics.

The largest counterpoint to the Microsoft Corporation is Apple incorporated. The Mac OS system is one of the most prevalent systems in the world. The Apple brand is considered to have the most loyal customers of all the electronics producers and the loyalty is never more visible than when a new Apple stores opens. When the New York City Apple Store opened the lined that started as soon as a day before the actual opening was nearly a half mile long. The brand loyalty that was created has been termed one of the largest marketing successes of the late 90s and early 2000s. When the Tokyo Apply Store opened thousands got in line making an 80 block line just to get into the store. The computer systems that run the world are increasingly homogenized into a few categories based on commercialization. The most popular of which are the closed systems of the Microsoft Corporation and Apple incorporated, but also include the open system Linux.
